The Milk Grotto, a small sanctuary, situated about 300 meters uphill from the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, is known as the “Miracle Church” for the countless miracles that are said to have happened there. People from all walks of life have testified to powerful healings and divine interventions after praying the devotion, as countless stories from believers around the world attest. It is one of the most popular shrines dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Holy Land.
A Sacred History
The story of the Milk Grotto in Bethlehem goes all the way back to the first Christians. They believed that shortly after the birth of Jesus, the Holy Family left the Grotto of the Nativity and came to this nearby cave. Thus, there is a great possibility that the Milk Grotto was the house of the Holy Family.
Here, Mary, as a nursing mother, fed the Infant Jesus. Today, the church stands as a reminder of Mary’s Divine Maternity and her role as the Mother of God. This is the church in the Holy Land that celebrates the Feast of the Mother of God—Mary’s highest title—honoring and remembering her Divine Maternity.
The Miracle Of The White Stone
On entering the grotto, on the right-hand side, there is a large piece of stone that has a reddish hue. This is believed to be the cave’s original color. It is believed that one day, while Mary was nursing, drops of her milk fell on the rock, miraculously turning it from red to white—the color of milk. This miracle gave the grotto its name, the Milk Grotto.
Luke mentions that the shepherds visited the newborn Jesus immediately after his birth in the manger, while Matthew records that the Magi came sometime later.
After the birth in the manger, Mary and Joseph may have stayed nearby—possibly in the Milk Grotto—for some time, perhaps also completing the 40 days before the presentation and purification in Jerusalem. They may have been here during the Magi’s visit.
Beyond The Nativity Scene
In Matthew 2:7–14, Saint Matthew does not write that the three kings from the East went to the manger where Jesus was born. He does not mention a barn or animals. His words are simple and clear:
“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh."
After they departed, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, warning him of Herod’s plan to kill the child. Joseph then rose at night, took Mary and Jesus, and began the flight to Egypt. In this account, the “house” Matthew describes could have been the Milk Grotto itself.
A decorative star marks the sacred spot where tradition says the vision described in Matthew 2:13–14 occurred—the moment an angel appeared to Joseph.
A Place Of Grace And Devotion
Thus, the Milk Grotto is not just a brief stop on the road to Egypt but a significant part of the Bethlehem narrative of the Holy Family’s life. Its deep connection to their presence makes it an important site in Christian devotion, where pilgrims seek Mary’s intercession for healing, believing that graces flow from this holy place when one turns to the Lord and His Mother for help.
Miracles And Testimonies Of The Pilgrims
Throughout the ages, pilgrims and faithful—especially women—have flocked to the church and prayed to the Virgin Mary to intercede on their behalf for:
- Motherhood
- Receiving a peaceful birth
- Plenty of milk when their child arrives
The powder of the white rock of the Milk Grotto represents a precious relic and is considered effective for obtaining grace.
Over the centuries, countless testimonies have been recorded, with thousands of babies born to women who had long been unable to conceive. Thousands of letters, photographs, and personal accounts now fill the shrine’s archives, bearing witness to the faith, healing, and hope found in this sacred place. These are living testimonies of the grace received and the devotion faithfully practiced.
Miracles attributed to the grotto are not limited to fertility. Visitors have also reported healings from paralysis, deafness, blindness, leukemia, and other serious illnesses after praying here in faith.
Remarkable Testimonies Include:
- Advanced Cancer Devotion: Some people have testified that they had advanced cancer and prayed this devotion for a successful surgery. When they entered the hospital, pre-operative tests showed no sign of the disease—the cancer had completely disappeared.
- Leukemia Miracle: A young girl in Haifa who was dying of leukemia was miraculously healed after her family prayed at the Milk Grotto and gave her its white powder daily during the Holy Hour.
- Italian Tour Guide's Healing: An Italian woman diagnosed with breast cancer prayed in the grotto, felt a surge of energy, and was later found cancer-free with no surgery needed.
- Breech Baby Miracle: A Maryland woman’s breech baby turned to the correct position overnight after prayer and use of the grotto’s powder.
- Uterine Cancer Disappearance: A woman from Barcelona was cured of uterine cancer after praying the novena to Our Lady of the Milk.
Prayer To Our Lady Of The Milk Grotto
Our Lady's life is entirely determined by the relationship with God and, therefore, it is a gift. From God she received her own motherhood and freely she gives this gift to those who turn to Her with faith asking for the same Grace.
This devotion is prayed every day until the baby is born.
Lovely Mother of the child Jesus and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows all my desires, all my needs. Only to you, Immaculate Virgin, has your Divine Son given to understand the feelings that fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being Mother of the Savior. Intercede now with Him, my dear Mother, so that, according to His will, I may be mother (or: mother of other children sent by the Lord). This I ask, Lady of the Milk, in the name of your Divine Son, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
Pray the Third Joyful Mystery of the Rosary — the Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem — followed by 1 Our Father and 10 Hail Marys. Ask the Virgin of the Milk Grotto to intercede with God to heal their maternal difficulty and to have a child.

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of difficult cases, of things almost despaired of, Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone.
Intercede with God for me that He bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly
(make your request here)
and that I may praise God with you and all the saints forever. I promise, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor granted me by God and to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you.
Amen
This Novena prayer will be helpful to those helpless people when everything fails, and who wants speedy and visible answers to their agony.
Oh Most Holy Virgin! You were chosen by the Most Adorable Trinity from all eternity to be the most pure Mother of Jesus.
Oh! Tender Mother of the afflicted! Grant me under my present necessities that special protection. Relying on the infinite mercies of your Divine Son, trusting in the promise which He has made that those who ask should receive, and with strong confidence in your powerful prayers, I most humbly plead you to intercede for me. I beg you to obtain for me the favours which I petition for in this novena, if it be the Holy Will of God to grant them; and if not, to ask for me whatever graces I most stand in need of.
(specify your requests)
Oh! Mother of God! accept these salutations in union with the respect and veneration with which the Angel Gabriel first hailed you, "Full of Grace".
(Recite the Hail Mary nine times)
I beseech you, Oh! comfortress of the afflicted, to obtain for me the favours and graces, which I have now implored through your powerful intercession. For this end I offer you my good works I do, and sufferings I endure. I most humbly plead you for the love of the amiable Heart of Jesus, with which yours was ever so inflammed, to hear my humble prayers and to obtain my requests.
Amen.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.
St. Andrew Christmas Novena, or the Christmas Novena, begins on St. Andrew’s feast, celebrated on November 30th—the day of his martyrdom—marking the threshold of what the Church later calls the season of Advent. The prayer itself has nothing to do with St. Andrew nor is it addressed to him, but starting on his feast reflects his role of leading others to Christ, connecting both the liturgical calendar and Andrew’s role in salvation history.
Andrew’s role in the Gospel aligns with the purpose of this novena. Three scenes in John reveal his generous spirit. Brother of Simon Peter and a disciple of John the Baptist, he is called the First-called—the first Apostle. Responding to John’s preaching—“I am preparing for one who is greater than myself”—Andrew eagerly anticipated the Messiah, immediately recognizing Jesus and following Him. His discipleship exemplifies watchfulness, generosity, readiness, and responsiveness—the very qualities Advent invites us to embrace. Beginning the novena on his feast provides the faithful with a spiritual rhythm of anticipation and encourages us to follow his example in preparing both ourselves and others for Christ’s coming at Christmas.
He was the first to bring others to Christ, starting with his brother Simon Peter to whom he declared, “We have found the Messiah,” and brought him to Jesus (John 1:41–42). At the feeding of the five thousand (John 6:9), Andrew identified what could be offered and brought the boy’s loaves and fishes to Jesus. He also guided others to Christ, such as the Greeks seeking Him through Philip. Similarly, this novena invites us to prepare our hearts and share God’s grace with others.
Most novenas last 9 days, but the St. Andrew Christmas Novena is an exception—prayed over 25 days, spanning the Advent season. It is piously believed that whoever recites the prayer 15 times each day (either all at once or throughout the day) from St. Andrew’s feast until Christmas Eve will receive powerful intercession. It is a prayer especially cherished by couples hoping to conceive and by anyone seeking special favours, while also being beautiful and meditative, helping us reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming.

Patron Saint of Mothers and the Falsely Accused
St. Gerard Majella, born in 1726 in Italy, is the patron saint of mothers, expectant mothers, and the falsely accused. A devout child, he endured hardships before joining the Redemptorists, where he worked tirelessly in various roles. Known for his deep spirituality, he performed miracles, including restoring life, multiplying food, and foreseeing future events. Falsely accused, he remained silent, trusting in God until his innocence was revealed. He died in 1755, accurately predicting his time of death. His intercession for pregnant women led to widespread devotion, and he was canonized in 1904. His feast day is October 16.
Here are the miracles St. Gerard Majella is known for:
- Restored a boy’s life after a fatal fall.
- Blessed a family's dwindling wheat supply, which miraculously lasted until the next harvest.
- Read the hidden sins of individuals, leading them to repentance.
- Foretold future events, including his own death.
- Prayed over a woman experiencing childbirth complications, allowing for a safe delivery.

We thank God for the great gift of our son/daughter and ask God to restore our child to health if such be the Holy will. This favor we beg of you through your love for all children and mothers. Present our promise to God to bring up the child as a good Christian and to guard them by word and example against the fatal leprosy of sin. This favor we implore of you, O sainted Brother, through the tender love with which Jesus and Mary blessed your own innocent childhood. Amen.
